Delayed Departure
We had a bit of luck yesterday, in a perverse sort of way. We'd about decided on Sunday to clear out Monday morning and head north. Then we found out that Trevor, on the boat Watea, had his 56th birthday on Monday, so decided to stay and have a little party with him and his wife Jan, and the German couple from Atlantis. The other boat in the anchorage decided to go on out. The morning looked fine, but by early afternoon it clouded over heavily, then rained torrentially, with some lightening. We were much happier having pizza and good conversation than we'd have been picking our way through a reef pass in the rain. Karen has enjoyed the cool breeze that came with the rain, and we let the canoe fill up with rain, then she took a cool bath in it. It works well as a bathtub! This morning when I opened the Rag of the Air radio net, I got a call from Phrene, the boat that left here yesterday. They were hit by a squall last night with 50 knots wind, which destroyed their main sail before they could get it down. Maureen said they were still sailing OK with the headsail, so would carry on to Tarawa. We'll check on them daily. This morning the weather here is even worse than yesterday, with continuous rain and squally winds, so we'll hang out here for better conditions before we go. Time to load a weather fax, and then settle down with a book! Ted
